The horrible thing
about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that
it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was
always unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to
kill, to torture, to smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow

瓦萊修士 - Umberto Eco
研究是一趟神秘的冒險之旅，能激發熱情，也保留了許多驚喜。參與其中的不是個人，而是一整個文化，因為想法有時候會自由來去，居無定所，消失後再現。……我不確定這個故事有何寓意，但我至少能說出一個，而且頗為動人。我希望我的讀者在他們的人生中能找到許多瓦萊修士，也希望我自己能成為某人的瓦萊修士。
